A 42-year-old man has died while in custody at HMP Berwyn in North Wales, with the Ministry of Justice confirming the death but declining to provide further details about the circumstances.

Shaun Roberts, born on 13 December 1983, died on the evening of Thursday, 8 October 2026, at the prison in Wrexham.

HMP Prisons Justice Group contacted the Ministry of Justice seeking clarification following the death.

In a response provided to the group, the Ministry of Justice stated:

At present, no details have been disclosed about the circumstances surrounding Mr Roberts’ death, and no cause of death has been established publicly.

It remains unclear what happened in the hours leading up to his death.
