Former Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford has been seen visiting his son, Jonathan Drakeford—now known as Jay Humphries—at HMP Parc, reigniting public scrutiny over a case that shocked Wales in 2018.

Jonathan Drakeford was convicted in 2018 at Cardiff Crown Court for a series of serious sexual offences. He was sentenced to eight years and eight months in prison after admitting to:

– Rape of a woman
– Inflicting actual bodily harm
– Attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, after messaging a girl on Facebook whom he believed to be 15 years old.

These crimes led to the imposition of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), designed to restrict his online activity and protect the public from further harm.

After being released on licence in early 2023, Humphries breached his SHPO by:

– Using a fake name on a dating site
– Deleting his internet history to conceal his activity

These violations led to a further prison sentence handed down in August 2023 at Caernarfon Crown Court. The presiding judge warned of a “very real risk” of reoffending if Humphries remained on licence.
